The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, in which the narrator explains that he was going to school to become a teacher. He is now studying to be a karuta queen. He asks the narrator what he should do if he does not have time to participate in the queen's match after the tournament. The narrator tells him that there are universities that he can go to, but that he should not forget about his club activities. He also tells the narrator that he will have to spend an extra year playing in the tournament if he wants to be the queen. The chapter ends with the narrator asking the president of the club what his next match will be. The president replies that it is about to start.
