In this chapter, the young narrator tries to convince himself that he doesn't want to see another woman give up on her quest to be a queen. He's worried that she's giving up on the idea of being a queen, and he wants her to know that he's not going to let her take one of his cards. He also wants to know what's up with the other women in the room, since they're competing against each other in a game of cards.
