In this chapter, the Underground Man explains how he came to believe in the existence of a "god" and how his father's betrayal of him has changed his life. He explains that his father was a "devoted believer" who was betrayed by his "brother" and who died at home. Since then, he has learned three things: 1) Be suspicious of everything; 2) Morals are useless; and 3) There is no god. The Underground Man concludes that if his experiments can only be done using this method, they only show that he is too weak.
