The novel opens with a flashback to the year 2032, in which Olivia Wilde is still in high school. She is in the middle of a sports competition, and Olivia's aunt has given her a race bib to wear. Olivia tells her aunt that she doesn't care if she loses the race, because she wants to win more. Olivia says that she has never thought that Olivia would disappoint her, and that she trusts that Olivia will stand by her side in the future.
