In this chapter, we learn that Panlos is still alive, and that his aunt and uncle are still alive as well. Panlos does not want to kill his aunt or uncle, but he does want Panlos to live on in the world without meaning, so he keeps them alive. He tells Panlos that he will win the race against him, but that he has to drink some water before he can do so. After Panlos finishes the race, he notices that class 3 has won the javelin competition. He wants to tell Panlos about it, but Panlos tells him that he is still not perfect, and he wants to become a better person like him.
