About This Chapter
In this short scene, the exiled Bulgar nobleman, the Bulgar ambassador, and the exiled nobleman's daughter, the daughter of the Illustrious Bulgar King, discuss the recent events in the country. Bulgar's son-in law, the son of the emperor's wife, is in attendance, and Bulgar asks the ambassador to come to the tent where the women of the tribe are entertaining the guests. The ambassador agrees, but he is concerned that the women are too promiscuous, and that the men do not allow them to entertain the female guests. He asks if the men will allow the women to entertain their husbands or sons, but the ambassador replies that this is not necessary, as the nations of the country are different from those of the "huns." Bulgar explains that every time a war ends, a lot of women lose their husbands, and so the tribe has to take advantage of every opportunity to have a child. If the war had not been waged, the kingdom would not have sent soldiers to face it, and many of the men who died in the war would have been innocent victims of the war. The nobleman concludes that the goddess of the sun, the goddess tu xie, must have been drunk, because she must have said that the kingdom was not high enough
