About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to a time when the Ming family was exiled from China. The Ming family had been living in exile in the U.S. since the fall of the Ming Emperor, and the Ming children had been raised by the Ming parents. The narrator tells us that the family was forced to flee the country because of a rebellion against the Ming emperor. Now that the Ming have returned, the family must find a new place to live. Ming asks his brother if he thinks he's going to go back to China, and he says he'll help him escape. Ming tells his brother not to be disrespectful to Miss Su, because now that she's back, they're going to be able to live in peace. Ming says that they'll all be brothers who serve Miss Su wholeheartedly, and that they will help her family expand. Ming reminds his brother that if he hadn't been loyal to her, his family wouldn't be in such a bad situation. Ming compares Ming to a general who guards the border between China and the United States. Ming thanks his brother for saving his life, and says that the truth about the political struggles wasn't even known to her at the time. Ming then asks her brother to do her a favor, and asks him to help her pursue Ming's brother. Ming wants to know if Ming will ever act normally, and Ming says he won't, because he forced Ming to sleep with her before. She asks Ming if he'd like to join her in rebuilding their family. Ming replies that he would like to have children to help them live up to their ancestors
