As the scene opens, a group of scholars has gathered in the courtyard of the ancient temple in which the soothsayer was believed to have been buried. The scholars are shocked to find that the old woman is dead, and they are unable to find any trace of her life. They are also shocked to learn that the man who killed her was the village secretary. The young scholar tries to find out how he killed her, but he cannot find any sign of struggle
