This chapter's epigraph comes from a line in Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice, in which Shylock says that he will die, but that his subconscious will devour him. In this passage, Shylock is referring to the role of the subconscious as a tool, a tool that must be guarded by all those who despise it. He says that the only way to do this is to use it as a weapon against those who do not like it. In other words, the only person who can do this job is the one who has the most hatred for the person who does not like him. Shylock tells the reader that he is sorry that he has to work so hard to not hate him, but he says that rem is also going to die, and that he cannot help him anymore. He asks the reader why he should not use the powers of his subconscious to save someone else, rather than using them to save himself. The reader agrees that this is the
