He theorizes that shelters usually are built under ground, but this is not the case. He suggests that if his theory is correct, then they need to go further to find the city. He asks the captain to carry him down to the subway station, where he thinks there might be a "scarecrow" lurking. The captain tells him to listen to him, and they head down. They find a hand on the ground, and the captain warns them not to get startled by the hand. There's more to come, he says, because there's going to be more human corpses along the way. They hear a can trap, and then they hear another can trap. They head down, but they hear more can traps. They think they're being attacked by spiders. They decide to use a torch to burn the spiders, but the captain tells them to wait for him, because he'll die if they don't hurry up and save him.
