About This Chapter
In this chapter, we are introduced to the protagonist of the novel, who is called "Geng Fu." He is a young man who has just returned from a trip to the forest, where he picked some fruits and had a taste of the local delicacies. He tells the protagonist that he has come back to the village because the villagers are talking about him. The protagonist, however, does not believe that they are talking of him. He feels that the whole village was hideous before he arrived, but now that they have returned, they are happy to be back. He asks the protagonist to bring some "Yu mei" , but the protagonist does not want to be shy, so he tells him to bring "some yu mei." The protagonist is amazed at the change in the villagers' attitude toward him, but he does not understand why he feels this way. He does not know why he has felt this way for so long.
