In this chapter, we are introduced to two new characters, one of whom is named Lan and the other named Xiao-hong. We learn that they have arrived on the island, and that they are not aware of anyone else there. They decide to look around and see if anyone is there, but they are interrupted by the sound of a splash. The two men immediately recognize each other, and they decide to eat some coconuts that they picked up from the beach the day before.
