In this chapter, we are introduced to the "silent box" of the novel, which was written by Gu Zhen. The narrator asks Gu Zhen if he is still dreaming about the box. Gu Zhen replies that he is not dreaming, but that he has seen the diary of zhong, who was killed in the box that Gu Zhen brought with him. In the diary, zhong says that he saw the box and opened it. Inside the box, Gu Zhen saw the head of Xiao Qian and a wound on his face. He apologizes to zhong for his love for her, but he does not want to die. He does not know what to do with his life. He begs the narrator to take the box to him, and he does so. When the narrator arrives, he is horrified to find that someone has jumped from the window.
