In this chapter, the Governess imagines what life would be like if she had to leave her son. She imagines that he would grow tired of her bad temper and she would leave him for someone better. He could even marry a strange woman and raise a child. She could die old age and he would watch her slowly close her eyes. He would die right after him. He couldn't save him, he says, and fate would wail. It shouldn't have been him, it's him who deserved a miserable end. He says he's got to go back to the academy if he wants to send his son to school. The Chief of the Clan will be furious if he sends him to school, and the Senate will try to get him to admit a half-demon if he decides to stay. The Governess says she won't return what will happen if she helps her son, and she tells him to "throw away" all of their food.
