This chapter's epigraph comes from the opening lines of Chapter 1 of the novel, "In which a young girl named Rose is taken in by a young man who has come to take her away from her father. The young man tells her that her father is a priest and that she should be grateful to him for taking her from her mother. The girl tells the priest that she wants to marry him, but the priest says that she will have to wait until she is old enough to marry a man of her own age.
