The chapter opens with a soliloquy by the Night Soul, who thanks the Night King for his help in the fight against the Mings. The Night King has been busy with the affairs of the realm, balancing the forces among different groups. He had no time to spare for the lady, who had been waiting for him. The night soul says that he didn't realize that the lady had been through such a lot in her life, and that impermanence was designed to kill souls. He says that the night soul is fierce, but that they shouldn't worry about it because the night king is busy with other matters. He also says that they don't need to worry about the lady because she's not afraid of him anymore. He tells them that he's here because he wants to find and bring back taotie, who has been hiding in the city. He thinks that they should try and avoid him, because he is super lazy.
