In this chapter, we learn that Alek has fallen in love with one of the soldiers in his regiment, and he wants to leave the army. He tells his father that he has come back with a map of the world, but that he does not have the map with him. He wants to wait until he is well enough to return to his regiment. Alek asks his father to call his superiors and ask them to let him go.
