In this chapter, we learn that the map is not a real one, but a fake one. The narrator explains that he has been working on the map for so long that he is just one piece away from completing the entire thing. He thinks that the people who put the map together knew that he was one last piece of the puzzle that needed to be put together. He wonders why they would give the fake map to him after finding the real one. He also wonders why the narrator would be so mad at her for pushing her so hard downtown. He admits that he would have destroyed the map if he knew the truth, but he is sorry that he did not know the truth. He tells the narrator that he made the map because he wanted to earn his trust by sending her to him. He asks the narrator if he will marry her, and the narrator tells him that he will know that he loves her before that day.
