The chapter opens with a discussion between the Governess and her Governess's five-year-old son. The Governess tells her son that she grew up with him and that he is the kind of person she likes. She tells him that he does not dare be himself because he likes her. She says that some people have turned into people they did not like at all and others have become better people for the person they liked. She asks him if he loves her or not. The child asks if she loves him or not, and she answers that she does. She goes on to say that today is the birthday of her grandmother and that she has to go shopping with her son. She is very excited to be going shopping with him because she has made the decision to attend the wedding of her son-in-law, Fan.
