About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a soliloquy in which the narrator tells the audience that he does not want to hear about his mother's past. He wants to know why his daughter is so idle. He asks her why her father is getting married in such a short period of time. She tells him that her mother told her that she should not put her father on the spot. He tells her that he is as old as her and that he will grow up and marry sooner or later. The narrator then asks why he did not act sooner when he found out that his father was cheating on his wife. He says that his stepmother came to change his wedding dress and he will wear it to his wedding soon. He also tells the story of his mother, who died before her divorce could be finalized. She was very fond of her son, but he was too honest with her and she drove the girl away before she could divorce him. She had a mental illness that made her happy, but she died too early. The chapter ends with the narrator asking the audience if the problems caused by the post will come to twins.
