About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a description of the disaster that struck Japan during the March 11th earthquake. The narrator tells us that the plan is for a park to be built on top of farmlands and to clean up the coast line. He also tells us about the people who have been displaced by the earthquake and how they are trying to rebuild their lives. He says that he is the master of the tour, and that he wants everyone to remember that they are helping first and foremost, and to forget about those who are still suffering from the disaster. He asks everyone to take this tour to heart and to share their experiences with their friends and family once they return. He tells them that he will be back in a few days to tell them all about the disaster and to give them advice on how to get back on their feet. When the narrator asks about the art club at his school, the teacher tells him that everyone has to join the club, but that he chose the easy option because he wants to be an artist. The teacher tells the narrator that he has slipped back into his Japanese accent, and he asks him to come over and have a drink with him tonight. The host of the inn, Onodera San, tells the story of how he and his wife have been working on a new home for the children at their rag academy. Ondodera says that they have finished the project in a day, and they are glad that the children will have a place to play again. He adds that he thinks that Ondoshima is trying to keep them apart from each other, since he knows that they will both be in the nation, and so they will not be able to communicate with each other.
