About This Chapter
It's tournament first round, and we're told that the guy's got a good chance of winning. He's just got to find a way to get him to the mat, because he's not strong enough to take him down. He has to figure out how to get the guy to throw some punches, and then he'll be able to land some takedowns. The guy has to stay out of the way of his opponent's punches, because that's the only way he can land a takedown. The other thing he can do is throw a punch, but he has to wait for his opponent to come forward, so he can throw a jab, a sweep, or a left hook. He doesn't know how to do this, because his opponent is so fast and so strong that he can't do anything with his feet. He knows that his opponent will try to counter him with a right or a kick, and that he has no chance of landing a single punch. He needs to find some way to take the guy down, because it's going to be tough. He thinks about how he used to be so strong, and he wonders how he can beat a guy like that. He remembers that maria told him to remember how to engage with the ground, and so he starts to think about what he should do. He realizes that he needs to get a takedown, because the guy is going to try to throw another punch at him. He wonders why the guy didn't just throw another right at him, or another kick at him . He also wonders how the guy managed to get close enough to strike him with the same side of his body that he steps forward with. This is called a "jun tsuki" , which is a kind of left-handed punch. It works like this: you strike with the side of your body that is closest to you, but you don't
