About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the real gao is named gao ji, and that he is a member of the royal family. We learn that gao's real name is "Gao ji" and that his pendant is made of the same jade as the one made by the crafts man. We also learn that his real name and the pendant are the same as the jade that he used to carve his own pendant. In other words, they are both from the same family. When we meet gao, he tells us that he wants to see his brother-in-law, the emperor, and tease him a little. He also tells him that he's going to leave for a bit, and then he'll come back and tell him what's up. When he gets back, we find out that brother-ling is there, too. He's been eating pancakes, and gao says that he didn't tell him anything, because he was so happy when he saw that he ate so much. He wants to talk to the emperor. He says that when he was a kid, he had to bear the whole world's hatred because his parents had sold their sister to pay the taxes that were due. This was the Emperor's mistake, he says, and he hates the emperor now. If he ever sees the emperor again, he'd like to say that he was doing his best to make him happy. He tells him about how he built a six- or seven-story tower out of ice, and how he brought a flute so that he could play a song for his brother. He hopes that when they get married, they'll be able to get along.
