In this chapter, Ling Ling explains that he has been waiting for his master to find someone with a "hair rope" . He tells her that his master loves to look at the stars and to play his flute, but he has only one song for her. Ling Ling says that she should be clear with her master. He says that his injuries are nearly healed and that he wants one year to leave. He asks her to return his embroidered shoe, but she refuses to do so. She says that he is indifferent to her and that she is not willing to speak to him because of her "physically and mentally condition." Ling Ling promises to accompany her down the mountain.
