The narrator tells us that his father has been by his side for a long time. He'll help him bring his father home when his mother scolds him, and he'll console him when his father gets drunk. He knows that his mother won't buy him any things at the beginning of the year, so he saves money to buy fabric for himself. The narrator says that he's never afraid of hardship. He says that if he had any close elders, it would be someone like "Zhang" . He wonders if he would be able to stay at home for the rest of his life. He also wonders if gao has any elders who would be willing to help him. He thinks that if there were any elders, he'd have to go to them. He doesn't know how to say this, but when he sees his brother-in-law, he can't wait to get home. He sees a hairpin with flowers attached to it. He asks if it's a gift from him, or someone else. He wants to know if there's someone else in the room, or if he has a fiance. She says that she has one, but that she's not sure if she can take it.
