It's hot outside, and the two of them have decided to go for a secret outing. They don't even know where they're going, because no one knows where they are. They're alone, and they can't figure out how to get up to the top of the stairs. The stairs are so small that no one can see them, but they do lead up to an atrium, where they can see the whole of the Basilica di San Marco from there. They can also see the ocean from there, which is why they call it their "secret place."
