About This Chapter
The narrator introduces us to a group of people who have come to live on the island of Manhome. They're all dressed up for the winter, and the weather is beautiful. The narrator tells us that he's been living on Manhome for 150 years, and that he and his family have changed to winter clothes at the company where he works. He's also introduced us to some of his co-workers, including a woman named Akari Mizunashi, who works for a company called Aria. Akari asks him if he'd like to come along with him on his tour of the city. The man says that he doesn't need a tour guide, since he knows the city very well. He also tells Akari that he can take on passengers as long as he has an instructor with him. He explains that the city is very, very complicated, and it takes a lot of manual labor to do all the household chores. He says that his daughter and husband want to visit the city just to see it, but he can't understand why they'd want to spend so much money on a city like this, especially since it's so complicated. He tells them that there are times when he gets lost in the city, and they stop for a baked potato, which makes him feel a little better.
