About This Chapter
In this short scene, Malateste tells us that he's caught a cold and is going to practice as a doctor without his friend, President Aria. He's not feeling well, so he leaves his friend behind to go practice. Akari, meanwhile, is wearing all black, so she's the first one to arrive at the practice, and she complains that it's too hot outside. She also complains that the pillars in the center of town are "too scary" because they're supposed to be a gateway to the island. She says that there's a story about a woman who asked for a funeral for her body in the cemetery on the island, and that's why the pillars are so scary. She's also worried that the ghost she heard about is actually there, because she feels like her whole boat will be "sucked into the deep darkness" waiting for her to return. She begs the doctor to give her a ride to the cemetery, but the doctor refuses to take her on his own, saying that the rules prohibit him from taking on customers. She asks the doctor if he'll let her take a ride, and the doctor says that he won't, because the rules require him to take on only customers, and he can't take on more than one customer at a time. She tells him that she'll be arriving at the cemetery at sunset, so the wind will chill her and make her cold worse.
