About This Chapter
The narrator introduces us to Mizunashi, the older brother of Akari, who is now working as a trader in the Venetian glass industry. Mizunashi tells the narrator that he has come to Venice to help Akari with her business. Akari is still an apprentice, Mizunishi says, but he is looking forward to helping her with her work today. The narrator tells Mizunaka that the glass is made with soda-lime without any lead, but those who provide high-quality goods receive great rewards. The glass is not fake because it has passed down the traditional technique, but because they have to collect the supplies and find the people who can take over the old techniques. Mizuminashi says that he is sorry that the old man's glass is no longer authentic, but that if someone thinks it is fake, they will believe that it is or is not. He says that right now, he can stand here, and say that he believes Akari to be a "wonderful undine" .
