About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's in the middle of a hot summer in the country of his dreams. He's looking for a cool place to chill out. He thinks that cats are great at finding these cool places, because they sleep two-thirds of their lives. The narrator thinks that the wind chimes in the distance are just like the mirages he sees in his dreams: they make a cool sound at night, but they also make a hot sound during the day. He wonders if it's possible to find a place like this in the heat of the day, where everyone else is gone. He wants to get an iced coffee, but he can't find it anywhere else in the world. He goes on to say that he was able to find his way to this place because "everyone was gone" . He says that he thought he was wandering into a dream, but that he had a hard time finding his way back. He tells the narrator that he saw "traveling water" , which sounds like water moving away from you as you walk by. It's a weird feeling, the narrator says, because you can never really catch up to the water in the real world. But if you catch it in the hot sun, it'll keep you cool. He asks the narrator to bring him back to the place where he saw the water, so that he can cool off in the summer.
