About This Chapter
In this brief scene, Frankenstein is overcome with grief. He feels that he has lost the battle against the vampires, and that no one else has lost his soul. He is also overcome by the fact that he is still alive. He wonders if the sun is still hot, and wonders if spring is still on the horizon. He also wonders if it is true that the great flood of antiquity wiped out the ancient evil of the earth, just as the flood of Noah's flood has wiped out mankind. He asks if he should choose the humans over his path, just like the flood wiped out ancient evil. The narrator tells us that Noah received a revelation from God and built an ark so that he and his family could escape the impending disaster. Modern humans are considered the descendants of Noah, and he never heard of them. He says that he feels pity for the old woman, who will live in solitude. He tells her that she will never be able to repay her kindness, and she tells him that he must watch over mankind's fate. She asks him to hush if he sheds a tear for her, and if he still shows a moment of weakness. She tells him to run away from the shore, because the river is breaking ice. She says that Arthur has rid the vampires of their "stud" and thus she has met her end. She wonders what is in the coffin, and her right arm is as if it were never torn off.
