In this chapter, we learn that Arthur has been missing since the previous night, and that he has been sitting in his room thinking about the future. He wonders if there is a future in which he and the rest of humankind will not have to fight each other to survive. He also wonders if the future holds infinite futures, in which there are infinite realities that can come to be. If so, he wonders, then they will have to die. He tells us that he had hoped to stop this process before it reached this point, but now he has yielded him to the devil. He says that he will live as a wolf until the judgment day.
