About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the "brain incubator," a device that allows scientists to monitor the activity of cells in the brain. The idea is that the brain can be controlled, but that the back-ground noise of the brain makes it difficult to do so. Brains that were once thrown away as waste can now be connected to the rest of the body, creating a "collective dream world" . The narrator explains that humans are on their way out anyway, and that they will need to find a way to get rid of the unlabeled brains. The ladder chairman says that he has brought roasted infant meat with him to the city. The chapter ends with a discussion of the revolution that has taken place in the Jupiter system since the first colony was built on the fifth planet, Jupiter.
