About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a soliloquy about how long it's been since the end of the world, and how many years have passed since the beginning of winter. The narrator muses that if they continue to live like this for so long, then they'll eventually die and become "the last living things" on earth. He imagines that someday, a million people will come to the frozen world and find the frozen figures of his family. They'll know that the world was theirs for plunder, and that they came to the ruined city with an arch. He thinks that they're going to be able to eat tonight, since they won't have to go hungry. Then he sees an arrow, which he thinks is a human arrow, and he realizes that the arrow was fired by a human. He tells the girl that she's welcome to come with him to meet his grandfather, who wants to see her. He's glad that she is alive, since he's seen her so many times that he hasn't seen her in over fifty years. He asks her if she'll help his grand children, and she says no, since her grandfather has already killed someone of hers. He says that he doesn't care if the war is between humans and animals, since it'll be over soon. He wonders if he could convince victor to come back to the farrrel shelter again, and if he can rape her after she dies.
