About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the little curly dog that was the first living creature to reach Earth's orbit has been destroyed by the launch of the Putnik 2, a capsule that will eventually take humans to the moon. The ship's commander, Mr. Jarndyce, is still alive, and he tells us that he will continue broadcasting the tournament from the capsule as long as he lives. He also reveals that his former student, yoko von der raiserklinge, has returned to the dojo, and that the impact of her return is "incalculable." Mr. Lorry, the chairman of the ladder assembly, is also present. He tells us, however, that he has no idea why they're there, and asks the chairman if he can tell them why they are there. The chairman tells him that he's not sure, but that they'll all be home by the time the tournament is over. He says that he doesn't know why, and Lorry asks if alita will marry him, but she says that they are both girls, so they can pretend to be each other. They're both "street urchins" , Lorry says, and under current law, children are "not deemed human." He's sad that he can't save her, but he says that the only way he can help her is to train her in "planet karate," an ideal place where children can train without fear.
