This chapter opens with a description of an encounter between a dog and a soldier. The dog is licking the soldier's flesh, and the soldier is trying to teach the dog to eat. The two dogs are so close that the dog is able to squeeze her flesh and squeeze her tongue. The soldier tries to teach her to eat, but the dog's tongue is so hot that she is unable to do so. When the soldier attempts to stop her, the dog gets wet. The soldiers are called in, and one of them, Sergeant Beatrice, asks the dog why she is getting wet.
