Captain maximilien shows off his new bayonet, which he says is a present from his "mammalian" mistress. He tells her to put it away, since it's not very important. He also tells her that he doesn't like her dog, but she's just a new face in the army, so they should just let her do whatever she wants with it. She's a "new face" , he says, and he's glad to have her around to keep him busy. He's also glad that she'll be able to use his kids, since a lot of their soldiers have died in a recent battle. He says he'll tell the sergeant about it before it gets out of hand, since the other officers are already on edge because of the war, and they don't have time to deal with the mess that's been created behind their backs. The captain says he knows what's going on, but he can't figure out a way to get rid of his mistress, who he thinks is a "crazy pervert" who wants to "die" . He asks the sergeant if he can just tell him to shut up, but the captain won't listen, because he knows his personality. He wants to get back at his mistress as much as he can, and the captain knows that he can do that. He just wants to take it easy on her, and let her have it. He wonders how far the dawn dog has gone to test him, since he ruined his night with her.
