He says that if the dog were to be bitten, he would sit still for a long time after being bitten, and the dog coughs up a lot of phlegm. The sergeant says that he has changed his mind about letting the dog go, because he realizes how useful the dog has been to the regiment, and he wants to get rid of him right now so that he won't have to say anything crazy to her.
