In this chapter, we learn that the captain of the night watch team has been ambushed by a group of enemy soldiers, and that he has been unable to find his way back to the group's camp because of a fever and a headache. The captain, however, does not want to be left behind, so he leaves the group to patrol the forest alone. The sergeant tells the captain that the enemy soldiers are now patrolling the area, and the captain is feeling better. He then gives the captain some morphine to help him sleep, and he is surprised to find that both the captain and the monster are alike. He asks the captain if the monster is like him because of medicine and fever, but the captain says that it is impossible for them to talk like that from now on, since they have been caught up in so many things
