About This Chapter
The soldiers are ready to go to war, but they're surprised to find that the doctors they've met aren't all that different from the rest of the population. They're all normal, the narrator tells us, but the doctor is "the only exception" . The narrator doesn't want to talk to the doctor, but he does want to know what's going on. The doctor tells him that he can stay in the back of the machine-gun, which means he can go out and kill as many people as he wants. He also tells the narrator that the other soldiers in his squadron are volunteers, too, so they can do whatever they want with the men they see on the ground. The captain asks the captain if he needs to protect the soldiers from the reptiles, and the captain says that's fine, but if they don't, it's their turn to kill the reptiles. He then tells the captain that the war is all about "whoosh making you livestock" , and that the soldiers have to go around and be killed in order to survive. He says that this war is about "bam splat," which means "ash and survive." The captain then asks the doctor if she thinks the soldiers are stupid, and she says that everyone who enlisted is stupid. She also says that the prisoners are stupid too, and they should be locked up around the perimeters of the prison so that they can't escape. The Captain says that he knew he should have broken the
