This chapter opens with a flashback to a dream in which Dr. Rivers is in the middle of treating a patient when a woman appears in his dream and squeezes him. Rivers realizes that this is a dream, but he doesn't know what to make of it. He thinks that the woman is just trying to get him to have sex with her, and that she's just using dirty gestures to get her way. He's not joking, though, when he says that the dream is just like the real thing. He says that he can't really remember what happened that day, because he drank so much that he couldn't finish all of his work that day. The woman is looking for him, and he's worried that she won't be able to remember all of the details of that day's events.
