Volk sends a reconnaissance team to find out what's going on in the forest. They find Volk's men, but they're too scared to do anything about it. Volk says he's not crazy, but the men are. They're alive, he says, and he'll stab them if they don't stop talking to him. He'll give them back the knife he gave him as a gift, and then he can go back to being a normal guy. He also says that his clothes are burning, and his buttons on his shirt are blackened as well. He says he doesn't know what to do, but he'd rather burn his clothes and turn into an animal than go out into the forest and kill the men who sent the reconnaissance team. He becomes the leader of the team, and when he dies, he plans to go back and kill them all.
