In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character named "Clunk" . Clunk is a young man who has just returned from a trip to the West Indies. He is a member of the Ku Klux Klan, which is a loose, violent, and anti-Semitic organization that exists in the United States to terrorize and terrify the people of the South. His mission is to terrorize the people living in the South by making them believe that they are inferior to the white people who live in the North. He has been trained to hate white people and to believe that white people are inherently inferior to black people. He hates black people because he believes that black people have a higher rate of crime than whites do. He also hates white people because of his belief that blacks are inferior in every way to whites. He wants to make sure that he does not go through with his goal of becoming a Klansman.
