In this chapter, we learn that the Russian agents have been using the Christmas massacre as an opportunity to get their hands on the original copy of the code that was used to destroy Darnay's cell. This is a big problem for them, because they're trying to get the original code back, but they can't figure out a way to get it back. They're also worried that the Russians have forgotten about it, since they've been using it to get back at Darnay ever since they kidnapped him. The only solution, says Darnay, is for the Russians to stop using the code. He's not sure how to do it, but he's sure that they'll find a way. Darnay asks if they can use the code to destroy the engine block of the car, since the Russian agent has no access to the engine. He says that they should use armor-piercing ammunition to get close to the car and destroy its engine block. He also says that he'll send a message to Darnay to be labeled a "wizard" , so that he won't be able to get into the car.
