This chapter opens with a description of the water in a bathtub. It is cold, and the water is full of chemicals that make the person feel sick. The narrator explains that people of his generation are lucky that their first contact was with parents, books, television, and so on. When they came to the world, they were whitewashed. This is the first time they have met an "unclean evil" . He takes off his clothes and bathes himself in the bathtub. He smells like a "dirty reptile" crawling from his toes to his throat. He later has a fever that lasts for a week. He tells his mother that he took the cold bath himself. He says that he did not want to fire the coach because he wanted to have more communication with him. The coach never showed up for class. He did not show up for the next two classes, so the narrator decides to tell his teacher that the students are not good enough for him. She tells him that she is his guardian and that he has to listen to her.
