In this short scene, the two young lovers are introduced to each other. The narrator tells us that he has just returned from a trip to China, and that he is now living with his aunt and uncle. He tells his aunt that he will be staying with her for a few days, and then he will return to her house. When he returns, he finds that his aunt has invited him to dinner, and he is very excited to be invited. He asks his aunt why she is inviting him, and she tells him that he seems to know his father very well. He then asks his father why he is ignoring him. He is surprised that his father would be so interested in a light-minded uncle, and asks if he is interested in "gu shun" . He also asks if his father wants to help him set the table, and if he wants to wear his father's custom-made clothes. He says that he does not need a biological father, but that he would like to be his own son. His aunt says that children should not smoke or drink, because they will drown their sorrows in drinks later on. She also says that it is okay to stop someone from drinking, because he is just a child. She says that she does not mind having a son, but he is not her own son, and says that if he were, she would not abuse him.
