This chapter opens in a schoolroom in the northern suburbs of the city. It's the middle of the day, and the students are talking to each other. One of the girls, Lin Fan, is crying out for help because she's afraid that someone will touch her. The other girl, Fang Hong, is also crying out because she wants to help her friend.
