This chapter opens with a flashback to the winter of Ina's death. The narrator tells the story of how a man hid a box outside the family's house during the winter. The man wanted to hide the box more than anything, but there was a man who secretly came every day to see the man who hid the box. This man was responsible for the deaths of the children in the box, and the narrator is certain that this man is the one who committed the murders. He tells the narrator that he has continued to keep his promise to return to the family.
