The narrator begins this chapter by saying that fate is a "straight and visible path" that guardians can follow. They just need to "use the perfect speed" to "traverse down that path." Each of the guardians has a partner, and each of them has a wish that they would like the guardians to fulfill. The guardians usually go ahead and fulfill the wishes of their partners, but if the wishes are not fulfilled, the partners' feet will move faster on the path. For example, one of the partners would like to be able to "flow in their body like regular humans." The guardians would listen to the wishes and fulfill them. However, if they were to make the wishes come true, then the partners feet would move faster and the journey would be easier. In the past, the guardians would fulfill their partners' wishes with joy, but in the present, they do not even know that their journey will not be easy. One day, they hear the voices of their partner, who is tired of the job and wants to "pass the power onto another." The narrator tells the reader that the guardians will never let their partners go.
