About This Chapter
The narrator asks if it's okay to leave Roxane alone. She doesn't want to worry about her, but she does need times like these. He asks if he can eat his eggs, which he hasn't tried yet, but he can do so if he has to do so. The narrator says he's not broke, and that he has plenty of money to return the food. He says he didn't say anything, and he hasnt had a lot of reasons to use the food until now. He tells the narrator that he had a "grim expression" before they came in the store, and the narrator is shocked that he was so shocked. He wonders if there's something wrong with the toy, and wonders if the customer has realized that they've gotten a gift like that. He also wonders if he should just tell them to open the gift, or if he'll have to do it himself. He's trying to keep the gift magical, he says, and asks the narrator if he got the toy as a gift from Santa Claus this year, too. He thinks so, and says he saw a red ribbon wrapped around the toy. He saw the bundle at the house, and thanks to the narrator, he was able to finish the task in a jiffy. He wants to know if they should have brought Roxane with them, and if she'll be pretty, so they can start heading back to the house. Roxane says she needs to learn to say "no" when she's shopping, and she wonders why he did that to her. She wonders if they'll find some use for the things in her bag someday, and then she asks why the narrator did it to her .
